Twenty-Seven

“CAN WE TALK?”

“Oh, hey Cole.” Caught off guard, Sheriff York stood up quickly, closing Ronnie's Snap-On tool chest as he straightened from his slouch to look up. Cole sensed York was embarrassed. It was more than his look—reddening cheeks, shifty eyes—like a boy who has been caught rummaging through his old man's porn stash. “Uh, yeah, we can talk.”

“I need your help.”

“With?”

“C'mon, Pat, you know what I'm asking.”

“I suppose I do.” York checked on his deputy just outside of the garage searching the vehicles. He probably wouldn't hear them, but just the same, York leaned in close to Cole and lowered his voice. “I gotta tell ya, Cole, this woman has a real hair up her ass about Nevada. In fact, that's what helped her get this warrant.”

“That's why I need to talk to you.”

York looked up at Cole, looking for his eyes. To read them. “Are you ready to come clean about what happened there?”

Cole didn't respond.

“That's what I was afraid of. You're going to have to give me the whole story if you want help.”

“Fair enough, Sheriff.”

Cole turned his back on York and walked away. He could almost feel the sheriff watching him go.

York finally snapped. “Damn it, Cole. What have you got?Cole stopped and turned to face him. “I went out to the crime scene last night.”

He gave Cole a frustrated look. Cole half expected York to give him a chewing out for interfering with an investigation or spoiling evidence.

“And?”

“I found a bootprint a little ways down the trail,” Cole said. “I think someone survived the gunfight and walked out of there.”

“You're sure it's not one of my guys?”

“Any of them wear cowboy boots?”

“I don't think so. We get duty boots for the department. You're sure it's a fresh print? That it couldn't have been left a few days back?”

“You know I can track better than that.”

“I suppose you can. Alright, I'll tell you what. Let her get this search out of her system and I'll talk to her about this bootprint. I want your word, though, Cole! Tell me you and your brothers don't have anything to do with this!”

“I swear it, Pat. On my father's grave.”

York scowled as he mulled that over. He knew Cole didn't make that promise lightly.

“I guess that'll work.”

“Thanks, Pat. I appreciate it.”

“Don't thank me yet. One of these days, you and I are going to sit down and have a chat about Nevada. Everybody's entitled to their secrets, but just remember: those secrets often come back and bite us in the ass.”

“And then some,” Cole muttered.
